A folding lock is the middle ground a lot of ebike riders actually want. It gives you more security than a cable, packs down smaller than a chain, and reaches farther than a U-lock. The Link Lock folds into a compact block that rides on your frame, then opens out to 34" of reinforced stainless steel links, so you can get around wide bike racks, larger posts, or a fat tire and frame in one pass.

Where a folding lock fits on an ebike

We sell three other locks, and they are not interchangeable. Here is how we would actually pick between them, and our full ebike lock buying guide compares all four side by side.

• Reach is the reason to buy this one. 34" wraps around things a 9" U-lock shackle simply cannot reach: wide bike racks, thick posts, or a fat tire and the frame together. If everything you lock to is a standard skinny rack, the UKASE MAX U-lock is more lock for less money.
• It packs down; a chain does not. At 2 lbs and folded into its case, this carries far more neatly than our 4-foot ChainKASE X-TREME. The chain is the tougher lock and gives you more length, but you feel it in a bag or on the frame.
• Check your bottle bosses before you order. The molded case bolts to frame bottle bosses, and this is the part that trips people up on ebikes. Plenty of ebikes ship with no bosses at all, and on the ones that have them, a bottle cage is usually already there. If that is your bike, use the included 24" straps, or move your bottle to our strap-mount ABC Cage or handlebar cage and free the bosses up for the lock.
• Be realistic about the security tier. No lock is theft-proof. Folding locks generally sit between cable locks and heavy chains: a strong deterrent for errands, trailheads, work stops, and daily commuting. For overnight street parking or a high-theft city, we would still run a heavier lock, or two locks of different types.

How long is it when it is open?

34". That is the number that matters, because it determines what you can lock to. Measure the rack or post you use most before you decide between this and a U-lock.

How does it mount to my ebike?

Two ways. The molded case has a bracket that bolts to your frame's bottle bosses, or you can use the included 24" straps to attach it almost anywhere on the frame.

What if my ebike has no bottle bosses?

Use the straps. A lot of ebikes have no bosses, and many that do already have a bottle cage bolted on, so the straps are what most riders will end up using.

Is it keyed or a combination lock?

Keyed, and it ships with 2 stainless keys. Keep the spare somewhere other than your bike bag.

How much does it weigh?

2 lbs. That is the trade for the folding design: lighter and tidier to carry than a 4-foot chain, heavier than a cable lock.

Will it reach around a fat tire?

34" is generally enough to get a fat tire and the frame, or a tire and a rack, depending on the rack. On a fat-tire ebike, run the lock through the rear triangle and the rim rather than just the tire.

Does it have a published security rating?

Not one we can point you to. BiKASE does not publish a Sold Secure or ART rating for this lock, so we are not going to invent a tier for it. Judge it on the construction listed above and the way you plan to use it.

Is one lock enough for an ebike?

For short, attended stops, usually. For anything longer in a place bikes actually get stolen, two locks of different types is the honest answer, because it forces a thief to carry two different tools.
